Matejs Kalns is a Canadian novelist who holds degrees in History from the University of Ottawa, Human Security & Peacebuilding from Royal Roads University, and is an alumnus of the Humber School for Writers.

His debut novel, Beasts of the Night (2020), was released independently through FriesenPress to widespread acclaim. An international thriller and exploration of the dark underworld of human trafficking, it received praise from the notable literary magazine Kirkus Reviews for its “remarkable characters [who] headline a nerve-wracking abduction tale.”

For his sophomore effort, Matejs returned to more personal themes of East European history, releasing Baltic Shadows (2023), a noir, Soviet-era mystery, whose plot of murder and intrigue stretches from Toronto to occupied Rīga. Noted for its themes of espionage and émigré politics, it too was commended by Kirkus Reviews as “a hot take on the Cold War; highly recommended.”

His forthcoming novel, Those Who Fled, deals with themes of wartime displacement, shedding light on the great Baltic exodus of the Second World War. A descendant of Latvian refugees, his writing often focuses on the history of the Baltic states during the turbulent 20th century.
