Matejs Kalns was raised in the Latvian community of Toronto, Canada, and holds degrees in History from the University of Ottawa, and Human Security & Peacebuilding from Royal Roads University. His debut novel, Beasts of the Night (2020), was released independently through FriesenPress to widespread acclaim. An international thriller and exploration of the dark underworld of human trafficking, it received praise from the notable literary magazine Kirkus Reviews for its “remarkable characters [who] headline a nerve-wracking abduction tale.” For his sophomore effort, Matejs returned to more personal themes of East European history, releasing Baltic Shadows (2023), a noir, Soviet-era mystery, whose plot of murder and intrigue stretches from Toronto to occupied Rīga. Noted for its themes of espionage and émigré politics, it too was commended by Kirkus Reviews as “a hot take on the Cold War; highly recommended.” contact Matejs
